it rained here for a couple a days so when the weather finally cleared i grabbed by camera and bicycle and headed out. the roads on the mountains have so much cover from the trees around them that it takes forever for the roads to really dry. a lot of them actually have moss growing on them. when i fell i wasnt going fast, and i’ve had the bike slide out from under me a couple times going over railroad tracks or manhole covers without falling, so i thought i could handle whatever the road threw at me. well, obviously i couldnt.

the video is what it is quality-wise. adobe premiere literally crashed over 20 times while making it.
my uncle, “unk” soundly defeated my 11 month old niece kaylee, in an combined eating and overall cuteness contest the other day. unk said his fork skills gave him upper hand in the end. according to the victor, using the back of the fork he was able to pack all the food into a dense patty, making it much easier to handle separate portions on the plate. kaylee’s wild freestyle approach, which had served her well up to this point, was unable to compete with the meticulous veteran. half-way though the competition she simply lost consciousness.
congratulations unk. we are all very proud of you.
well, things are moving along studio-wise. no more running around for a little while so I can focus on my work. next week im going to the other side of the country to help fire John Dix’s kiln and to meet with an Osaka gallery owner. after that i have to find a job. boo hoo.

in the meantime im working on the house for a few hours a day and drawing the rest of the time. im really satisfied with these non-specific organic clump works I’ve been making recently. the media isnt giving me problems like I had in the Nagoya crowd series. the shapes in the drawings take on a life of their own, with the same kind of dynamic interactions as the Oni Landscape series but without feeling as automated as that series had. i’ve done a couple on wood paneling and MDF but most of the ones I like best have been on paper. im aiming to get a couple of the larger pieces in a finished state, and hopefully documented before I leave town.
new day, new video. i heard a rumor that someone is taking an interest in my activities. nice to know someone is keeping an eye on me. I wouldnt want to get myself into any trouble.

*note: if you want to see the video in higher quality view it through you-tube.com and select “watch in high quality”

i am also including an image of the final drawing since u-tube has such lovely video quality.
i took the kuota for a spin around the neighborhood today.

i dont think that old zupp knows what he is up against over here video-wise. i got the youth on my side baby and a whole range of subject matter that has nothing to do with certain georgian white trash.

new vid post tomorrow.
finished firing Chiaki Horikoshi’s kiln. i’ve been on amerikan time ever since i got back here in order to work the 2am to 10am shift… its nice to to be awake during the day again.
i
i finally got around to buying a new computer and camera to continue a u-tube challenge from the last of the Zupps, so i put together a movie from a couple days of the firing.
i am back in japan. Chiaki’s kiln is being fired now so I’ll be working on that this week while rushing to get ready for a show in tokyo that a friend set up for me while i was out of town.

the other day in missouri i visited an old friend, gregg lewis. he took me out to his mother’s farm to do some good old-fashioned shootin. i was a little uneasy about playing with guns but gregg assured me this was a perfectly safe activity. after his mother told us a story about gregg’s high school principal dying in a hunting accident while climbing over a fence we headed out for some target practice. deer hunting season is just right around the corner. citing my lack of gun experience gregg gave me a crash course in handling/loading the rifle. he showed me all the right steps and everything but didnt really emphasize that the gun that was loaded and cocked every time you eject a fired bullet shell. gregg was trying to explain how to put the gun on safety but my failing to realize that every time you pull back on the bolt the next bullet is primed to fire proved to be a problem. its kind of hard to explain but to return the loaded gun to a safe position you have to pull back on the cocked hammer, then press the trigger (seems counter-intuitive when one is trying NOT to fire the gun) and slowly release the hammer and trigger. i learned very quickly if that spring-loaded hammer slips forward too quickly the rifle will go off. and that isnt very safe at all.
yesterday I went shopping in K-mart in rural missouri and saw something I didnt know was possible. I saw a woman in yellow sweatpants that was so fat she actually had two asses. one big, regular fat ass and a second one kind of sagging out of the area where a normal-sized person would have an ass. the sweatpants material did a really good job of defining the shapes without restricting their natural form. i really wanted to take a picture but decided against it thinking of personal safety.

i drew a sketch of her yelling at her litter of kids across the store.
