kiln all ready to go. still a lot of work to do but its a relief to have the pots in there. probably will be around 20 people helping out during the firing so it should go pretty smoothly.

a few weeks back.. maybe its been a month now, chiaki took part in a city-wide jazz festival in Yokohama. fuyuko and mome sewed together a giant canvas for the stage backdrop at Kanai Hall. all the onishi kids went down to enjoy the music and help Chiaki do a live painting performance /collaboration with the band. I tried to get the actual music from the show from a friend but have been waiting so long I just used some other jazz music for the soundtrack…
the applause of the audience before chiaki came on stage actually made me a little nervous. its gotta be hard to concentrate on a painting with 1000+ eyeballs on your back the whole time.
-
so, this is the first video i’ve taken with the canon 7D…. hopefully ill get better over time.

a group of japanese guys including Yasuhiro Iwatani and a brazilian guy named Louis Silva are putting together a website and something of a community of “interesting” people in japan. what they are trying to do is something similar to the Cool Hunting Videos podcast with a little less art world snobbery.
according to their site:
We all Japan” its a free independent internet TV video project. which the main purpose of this entertainment program is to spread out the current culture of Japan and about the interesting people who habitat this country, making the high-tech samurai land more unique, and one of the most attractive cities in the planet.
-
heres the result of all their hard work for the first episode:

-
please comment on youtube or contact these guys if you like their work.. they are doing this for free after all.

going to yokohama today and tomorrow to assist chiaki with 7 other people. he’s doing a live painting at a jazz festival there. fuyuko and mome made the 100 foot long canvas last week. hopefully we dont have to work the whole time and walk around the festival a bit.

an unrelated video from several years back:

kjell hahn overtaken by the spirt of erez sitzer’s terrible amazanga art devoted an entire CD and series of videos to the experience.

finally got a digital copy of a video from the oni ten exhibition.
hope you enjoy it.
this video was made by ai deguchi at the onishi festival in the summer of 2009. shot with 8mm film and video camera. A lot of info was lost transferring from film to the computer, then compressing it for youtube. still looks good.

Ive gotten a few emails asking for the oni ten images asap.
I have not forgotten this fact.
just take any exhibition you have participated in, then multiply the work by 30 and you might understand why the images arent up and organized in a timely manner.
-
in the meantime. here is one of the oniten drawing installations I did for the show… i must have had this idea in my head for a couple years now. I have wanted to make tunnels, boxes, environmental drawings that envelop the viewer. very nice to see one actually made.

its the onishi crew up the mountain at chiaki horikoshi’s kiln, makin a movie.
(im uploading a few skits from the collaborative project of ai ideguchi, chiaki horikoshi and shigeki yoshida onto my youtube account. the video is called “Yoshida Otokichi no sekai” or “The world of Yoshida Otokichi.” pretty much everyone who visits this place is forced to act out a scene or two. No plot, but amusing. I tried to put up videos where you dont have to understand japanese… not that any of them make any sense.)

people steadily streamed into the gallery from 2 to 9 last night. neighbors, artists from tokyo and random people from around gunma came and brought this place to life. tom thumb has found a second home in Japan.
-
