Similar to the “oni landscape” drawings, “city landscape” studies groups of non-human figures and their interactions. The drawings illustrate a simple city scene but do so by personifying the normally cold, gray structures, giving them an organic atmosphere filled with the same tension as a crowd. The choice of lines and mark making undermines even the most basic principles of structure though somehow these buildings surge out of the ground defiantly, each clamoring for the sky. The twisted, leaning structures activate the space around them, pulling at one another making anything but a static scene. Each window and wall clings to its own identity, a pattern or conflicting mash of lines, putting it at odds with the other objects in the drawing.
